Cold Sores and Sties

Cold sores (fever blisters) and sties (koorsblare en karkatjies) are irritating ailments that are often blamed on a weak immune system.  In Afrikaans we say "jou gestel is af". Fortunately there is an easy cure. Lysine, an essential amino acid that cannot be manufactured in the body and is found in food sources like eggs, lima beans and fish, has the capacity to fight and/or prevent the outbreak of cold sores and herpes viruses effectively. Taking supplemental L-lysine, together with vitamin C with bioflavonoids, is the answer more often than not.  A colleague of mine supplemented lysine for a month. As a result she rid herself of a stye on her eyelid that used to recur three or four times a year. 

Lysine deficiencies can also result in anaemia, bloodshot eyes, lack of energy and hair loss. This amino acid also aids in the production of hormones and antibodies. For those recovering from surgery, it helps with tissue repair, collagen formation and to build muscle protein. Lysine helps calcium absorption too. 

New findings that open up new directions in prevention and treatment of cancer indicate that it is lysine that keeps cancer cells in place and prevent their spreading through collagen. Lysine has the effect of blocking the enzymes that dissolve collagen, resulting in encapsulation of the tumor. The lysine block cannot overshoot its goal, not even when taken in high amounts, such as 4000mg or 8000 mg a day. Lysine (or L-lysine) is readily available in most health shops.
